Guidelines for the compilation of the explanatory notes

Illustrative notes

The Illustrative Notes are the document where it is possible to report all the information and summaries that, due to obvious space requirements, cannot appear in the paper field and in the sheet frame. In this sense, the Illustrative Notes must be considered an integral part of the sheet, to complete which it's possible to produce diagrams, sections, tables, photos and anything else deemed useful. It will also be possible to report excerpts of surveys at a scale higher than 1:50,000, to represent in greater detail areas of complex tectonics and/or stratigraphy.
In addition to the integration function of the sheet, the Notes can be the tool to highlight unresolved problems and issues to be explored in depth, as well as to compare different interpretations.
It is important to underline that, since the Illustrative Notes are a technical-scientific tool used by the entire community of geologists - and not only - it is recommended to present the fundamental data in advance, in a clear and simple way, continuing with more and more analytical detail, until getting to summaries and interpretations usable by "experts" and specialists.
As a minimum, the Illustrative Notes should include the following titles, articulated as follows:

  1. INTRODUCTION
  2. PREVIOUS STUDIES
  3. HINTS OF GEOMORPHOLOGY AND GEOLOGICAL FRAMEWORK
  4. STRATIGRAPHY
  5. TECTONICS
  6. ELEMENTS OF TECHNICAL AND APPLIED GEOLOGY
  7. BIBLIOGRAPHICAL REFERENCES

The breadth of the various topics will obviously depend on the type of area included and, consequently, on the geological issues addressed. Chapters, paragraphs and sub-paragraphs can be added to deepen certain topics (e.g., petrography, sedimentology, marine geology). For homogeneity needs, however, the Illustrative Notes must always comply with what is reported in the Notebooks, series III, n. 1 and 2, as regards general indications.
The extenders' name can be added in brackets to the title of the various topics.
