The Carta della Natura Habitats - Descriptions of habitats for cartography at 1: 50,000 scale

Manual describes all the national Habitat used in the Carta della Natura system at 1:50,000 scale. Habitats are expressed and represented by the biotopes as described in the CORINE Biotopes System. A subset of 230 items from the original legend has been selected, in order to guarantee a reference legend in habitats interpretation, representing all mapping habitats in Italy at 1:50.000 scale.

Correspondence with EUNIS habitat type and Natura2000 network sites code has been identified for each habitat, in order to compare the maps and to highlight the habitats distribution and presence of the Annex I but also their fragmentation and rarity. This approach is extremely functional to highlight possible shortcomings of Natura2000 in Italian ecosystems.

The classification is based on Corine Biotopes and allows a comparison with EUNIS and NATURA2000 classifications.

This manual shows results achieved during more than five years of field research made by the ISPRA technical staff.

It is an essential and practical guide: fast consulting is facilitated by division in forms containing for each Habitat a summary of the main characteristics, in many cases accompanied by photos.
