Published EEA Report Europe's Environment 2025

Despite significant progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution, the overall state of the environment in Europe is not good, particularly with regard to nature, which continues to suffer from degradation, overexploitation, and biodiversity loss, as well as from the acceleration of climate change, which poses an urgent challenge.

These are the conclusions of the Report Europe's Environment  2025, published today by the European Environment Agency (EEA). The report provides the most comprehensive analysis of the current state and outlook for the environment, climate, and sustainability on the continent, based on data from 38 countries. The outlook for most environmental trends is alarming and poses serious risks to economic prosperity, security, and quality of life in Europe.

It is urgent to rethink the connections between our economy and the natural environment, land, water, and natural resources. Only by restoring Europe’s natural environment it will be possible to maintain a competitive economy and a high quality of life for European citizens.

The report has been prepared in close collaboration with the EEA’s European Environment Information and Observation Network (Eionet), which draws on the expertise of leading environmental experts and scientists from the 32 EEA member countries and six cooperating countries.

The results of the report will be presented today by the EEA’s Executive Director, Leena Ylä-Mononen, at a joint press conference with the European Commission.

Tomorrow, 30 September (from 14:00 to 18:30 CEST), the report will be presented in Brussels during the conference “EU’s Environment for Prosperity and Resilience”, organized by the Danish Presidency of the Council of the European Union and the General Secretariat of the Council. A streaming link will be shared on the event’s page.

The panel discussions will be opened by EEA Executive Director Leena Ylä-Mononen. The event, which will bring together high-level representatives from EU Member States, the European Commission, the European Parliament, civil society, and industry, will also feature the participation of ISPRA President Stefano Laporta.

The dissemination process of the report, which will provide essential knowledge for policymakers designing the EU’s environmental policy for the next five years, will also involve Eionet countries, which will organize dedicated events in the coming months.

Italy will launch the European report with a high-level event on 28 October, together with two national reports — “State of the Environment in Italy 2025: Indicators and Analysis” by ISPRA and the “SNPA Environmental Report” by the National System for Environmental Protection — both based on the same information framework.
