Presentation of the Municipal Waste Report - edition 2025

The twenty-seventh edition of the Municipal Waste Report will be presented on December 11th in the Multipurpose Hall of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers in Rome. This report provides data updated to 2024 on the production, separate waste collection, management, and import/export flows of urban waste and packaging at the national, regional, and provincial levels.

The document, developed by ISPRA's National Center for Waste and Circular Economy with the contribution of local environmental agencies, offers a comprehensive and objective framework to support legislators in guiding policies and interventions, monitoring their effectiveness, and introducing any corrective measures.

The report also includes monitoring the costs of urban waste services, the application of the tariff system, and a review of the implementation status of territorial planning updated to 2024.

ISPRA in Ecomondo 2025

From November 4th to 7th, Rimini Fiera will host Ecomondo, the international trade fair that spotlights the circular economy, the green economy, and the blue economy, bringing together companies, researchers, and institutions for global dialogue. The event is divided into seven thematic macro-areas, each dedicated to a key aspect of the ecological transition. Presentation UNRIMA 2025 report

The presentation of the UNIRIMA 2025 Report "Raw Material Production – End of Waste from Separate Paper and Cardboard Collection" will take place on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, starting at 9:30 a.m. in Rome.
The UNIRIMA report, now in its eighth edition, aims to provide an overview of the waste paper collection, recovery, recycling, and trade sector. It includes data, insights into the economic aspects, and an overview of international scenarios updated to September 2025. This is a historic sector of the Italian green industry, which contributes significantly to achieving our country's recycling targets.

Green Book 2025 - Data on waste management in Italy

The Green Book is the reference monograph for the urban waste sector in Italy. The 2025 edition offers the usual contextual overview, ranging from regulatory aspects to tariffs, up to the economic-financial performance of operators, and includes an updated examination of the tender documentation. A specific focus is dedicated to the theme of recycling chains and energy recovery of the unsorted fraction, fundamental elements to guarantee the closure of the waste cycle.

Green Med Expo & Symposium 2025

Green Med offers a rich agenda of events. Its identity-based symposium approach aims to promote dialogue, cooperation, and the exchange of know-how among the main players in the green economy landscape. 50 events between organizations, companies, and promoting institutions, over 100 speakers to address environmental challenges together and seize the opportunities of the ecological transition. End of Waste. Construction and demolition: a comparison between protagonists

The end-of-waste regulation for the cessation of waste qualification is a fundamental element of the National Strategy for the Circular Economy (SEC), essential for the valorisation of waste, while at the same time allowing a reduction in the consumption of natural resources and raw materials.

Annual report Waste Commission

The annual report of the parliamentary commission of inquiry into illicit activities connected to the waste cycle and other environmental and agri-food offenses was held today at the Chamber of Deputies. 85 hearings have been held so far by the parliamentary commission of inquiry on illicit activities connected to the waste cycle and on other environmental and - this is a recently introduced area - agri-food offences. In detail, 71 hearings were held at the institutional offices of Palazzo San Macuto and 14 at the Prefectures of the local areas where the members were on mission. This was reported by Jacopo Morrone, president of the commission established in this legislature, while illustrating the annual report to the Chamber.

New update of the ISPRA indicators database

More than 200 indicators from the ISPRA environmental indicators database have been updated, the objective is to promote greater environmental awareness and involve the scientific community, in particular that of environmental statistics and information, in the crucial environmental issues of our time.

The database of environmental indicators, organized into 39 environmental themes, with over 300 indicators (ISPRA core set), is the most complete collection of statistical data and information on the state of the environment in Italy created and managed by the Institute for the Protection and Environmental Research (ISPRA) in collaboration with regional agencies and autonomous provinces within the National System for Environmental Protection (SNPA).

The indicators, classified under Environmental Themes, are structured in sheets containing descriptive information (metadata) such as, for example, the objectives to be achieved, the assessment of the state, the trend and data represented with graphs, tables and maps.

Municipal waste: production increased by 0.7% in 2023, separate collection at 66.6%

In the economic scenario of last year, with the Gross Domestic Product increasing by 0.7%, the national production of urban waste, after the decline of the previous two years, stood at almost 29.3 million tonnes with an increase of 0. 7%.
This is what emerges from the latest edition of the ISPRA Urban Waste Report, presented today in the presence of the Deputy Minister for the Environment and Energy Security Vannia Gava.
As regards separate waste collection, an overall national value of 66.6% was recorded, with percentages of 73.4% in the North, 62.3% in the Center and 58.9% in the South. Overall, almost 71% of Italian municipalities have achieved a percentage of separate waste collection greater than 65%.

As regards treatment and management, the recycling percentage of urban waste stands at 50.8%, up compared to the previous year (49.2%), above the 50% objective set by the legislation for 2020 (by 2030 the objective is much more ambitious and equal to 65%).
The overall municipal waste disposed of in landfill represents 15.8% of the municipal waste produced, standing at 4.6 million tonnes, down compared to the 5.2 million tonnes in 2022.

Presentation of the Report "L'Italia che ricicla"

This year "L'Italia che Ricicla" takes place in a context of intense regulatory ferment, both at community level, with the revision of the Framework Directive on waste, and at national level, where a revision of the Legislative Decree is expected. n. 152/2006. This represents a great opportunity to shift the focus of the sector from "waste management" to "product production", creating the conditions for creating markets for secondary raw materials that express value and that allow the principles of the circular economy to be implemented all over the world within an economic system that is aligned with the environmental benefits deriving from the re-introduction into production circuits of products derived from waste.

XI Edition of the Study Days “Research and Application of Ecotoxicological Methodologies”

As usual, every 2 years starting from 2006, ISPRA promotes the Study Days "Research and application of ecotoxicological methodologies" with the collaboration and support of other public and private institutions. These days represent a meeting moment for the Italian scientific community, control bodies, private individuals and all those interested in ecotoxicological issues and their practical applications and regulatory evolution.

Environmental crimes

The topic of "environmental crimes" will be addressed during a conference organized by the University of Naples "Parthenope" in collaboration with the Regional Environmental Protection Agency of Campania (Arpac) and the Italian Biologists Foundation (Fib).
The event will provide the opportunity to delve into current issues such as the fight against eco-crimes, the "weight" of environmental violations (ecomafias), the management of landfills and reclamation, the relationships between organized crime and businesses, the eco-crime of the Sarno river and other topics.

ISPRA in RemTech Expo 2024

From 18 to 20 September the XVIII Edition of RemTech Expo will be held in Ferrara, the Environmental Technological Hub specialized in the themes of restoration, regeneration and sustainable development of territories. This year too ISPRA will participate in numerous meetings.

Waste from Economic Activities: in 2022 production fell by 2.1%

The new edition of the ISPRA Report is online

In 2022, the conflict in Ukraine and the energy crisis negatively affected the Italian economy, causing a reduction in the production of waste from economic activities compared to 2021. Industrial, commercial, artisan, service, waste treatment and environmental remediation activities they generated a total of 161.4 million tonnes of waste from economic activities, recording a decrease of 2.1%, equivalent to over 3.4 million tonnes less compared to the previous year.

From the data collected in the latest Special Waste Report, now in its twenty-third edition, it is noted that once again it is the construction and demolition sector - with almost 80.8 million tonnes - that with the greatest total production of special waste, competing for 50% of the overall production.

Non-hazardous waste, which represents 93.8% of the total waste produced, fell by 2.7 million tonnes (-1.8%) and hazardous waste followed the same trend, decreasing by almost 680 thousand tonnes (-6, 4%). The overall figure sees non-hazardous special waste amounting to 151.4 million tonnes and dangerous waste to almost 10 million tonnes.

It is the manufacturing sector that has the greatest impact on the production of hazardous waste with 37.3%, corresponding to 3.7 million tonnes.

Presentation of the 2024 Ecomafia Report

Thirty years after the first Ecomafia Report, on 11 July the version updated to 2024 of the Legambiente Report will be presented, which recounts the numbers of environmental crime in Italy.
The volume presents the data collected by law enforcement agencies and port authorities on ecoregions in Italy in the last year. From the illegal cement cycle to the waste cycle (this year with a focus on e-waste, waste from electrical and electronic equipment). From crimes against animals, such as international trafficking of protected species, to crimes that damage archaeological finds, up to the illegal trade of refrigerant gases.

National Conference EcoForum - XI edition

During the meeting, the results of the assistance and support activities for the Municipalities will also be highlighted, with respect to the drafting of the development projects for separate waste collection.

By-products: problems and opportunities

The conference aims to analyze, also considering the latest news, the legislation - European, national and regional - and jurisprudence regarding by-products. The circular economy promotes, among other things, the reduction of waste and therefore also the valorisation of by-products. It should take place in environmentally safe conditions so as not to disqualify the use of by-products and also not to become an instrumental shortcut to cut waste management costs and to generate unfair competition with industrial waste recycling activities.

National Recycling Industry Conference

The conference dedicated to "The new frontiers of recycling in Italy" is promoted by the Foundation for Sustainable Development in collaboration with Conai and Pianeta2030, the monthly magazine of Corriere della Sera, with the patronage of the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security, of 'ISPRA and the National System for Environmental Protection.
