Established to recognize a woman and a man who have distinguished themselves in promoting geological awareness, geoethics and the protection of natural resources, the award has over the years honored individuals from academia, research, the professional sector, institutions and civil society.
“This prestigious award is an important recognition of the expertise, passion and determination of Maria Teresa Lettieri and all her colleagues at ISPRA’s Geological Survey of Italy. Their work provides, every day, the information needed to protect our territory. In-depth knowledge of our territory means, in fact, being able to protect it,” said ISPRA President Alessandra Gallone. “It means preventing risks and addressing the environmental challenges of the present and the future with greater awareness. This award reminds us of how essential scientific knowledge is to safeguarding our environmental and territorial heritage.”

For Maria Teresa Lettieri: “SIGEA-APS expresses its sincere recognition of Maria Teresa Lettieri, Head of the Structural and Marine Geology Service, for her decisive commitment to the resumption and continuation of the CARG Programme, aimed at producing the National Geological Map of Italy.
Dr Lettieri has consistently distinguished herself through her efforts to raise awareness among institutions of the crucial importance of completing the Geological Map, regarded as an essential tool for spatial planning, the country’s socio-economic development, and the protection of citizens.
The relaunch of the CARG Programme represents a fundamental turning point not only for scientific research, but also for natural hazard prevention, sound land management, and the promotion of geological awareness among younger generations.
Maria Teresa Lettieri receives unanimous recognition for having brought geological knowledge—through updated basic and thematic mapping—to the center of the attention and action of the Italian Parliament.”
