The theme chosen this year by the CBD Secretariat for the Day is “Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development” and underlines the importance of finding a balance between human needs and environmental conservation, promoting development that does not compromise the health of the planet.
The purpose of the Day is to urge political decision-makers to a greater commitment, involving all levels of government, from national to local, and all levels of society (businesses, media, scientific community, citizens), to implement policies, plans and projects that go in the direction of jointly and synergistically pursuing the three main objectives of the CBD and the seventeen SDGs, not only the environmental ones (biodiversity, climate, pollution), but also the socio-economic ones (including nutrition, health, hygiene, training, work). The Day must also serve to raise awareness of making decisions that separate socio-economic progress from the destruction of nature. And, since at the end of 2025 there will be only five years left to achieve the 23 targets of the KMGBF and the 17 SDGs, through the Day the International Day of Biodiversity, the CBD, through its Secretariat, invites States to act with a greater sense of urgency.
