COP 15 of UNCCD COP 15 of UNCCD

The biennial meeting of the delegations of 197 signatory countries of the United Nations Convention for the Fight against Desertification and the Effects of Drought - UNCCD will take place in Abidjan (Ivory Coast) from 9 to 20 May 2022, during which the sessions will be held of the Fifteenth Conference of the Parties (COP 15) and of the Subsidiary Bodies, i.e. the Twentieth Session of the Committee for the Review of the Implementation of the Convention (CRIC 20) and the Fifteenth Session of the Committee on Science and Technology (CST 15). Italy has been a signatory of the UNCCD since 1994.

The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) will hold three meetings concurrently in the last 2 weeks of March, to talk about the state of health of flora and fauna in the planet and in order to achieve a draft program to be finalized during the second part of the UN conference on biodiversity.

With the technical support of ISPRA, Vietnam, a country participating in the ICAT project, presented the NDC update. With this update, it is committed to taking drastic action to respond to climate change. In line with its socio-economic development strategy, Vietnam has pledged to reduce total greenhouse gas emissions by 9% with national resources, reaching up to 27% with international support.

Each week, the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification publishes the image and a description of people who play an important role in promoting the Convention goals. The month of March is dedicated to women and this Friday the Portrait of the Week is reserved to three women who are part of the Science Policy Interface, two eminent researchers, Nichole Barger and Everlyne Nairesiae, and one expert of ISPRA, Anna Luise.

Despite the actions taken by the Barcelona Convention over more than 40 years, the future of the Mediterranean is at a critical point. Damage to ecosystems that can compromise human well-being risks becoming irreversible. ISPRA, as the INFO / RAC Centre of UNEP MAP (Mediterranean Action Plan), focuses on the State of the Environment and Development in the Mediterranean (SoED) published by Plan Bleu and UNEP / MAP.

For the first time a joint Copernicus User Forum will take place with the support of the European Comission, the European Environment Agency and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). Initially planned for March, due to COVID-19 it was cancelled. Instead, it will take place online on July 10 from 10:00 to 13:45.  The meeting will be conducted in English, Italian and Spanish

"We still have a chance to restore our marine ecosystems if we act decisively and coherently and strike a sustainable balance between the way we use of seas and our impact on the marine environment" said Hans Bruyninckx, EEA executive director, referred to  the current condition of the European seas highlighted by the EEA "Marine Messages II" report. The precarious state of our seas affects the quality of life, the economy, the availability of raw materials, the production of oxygen and food, a suitable climate and even our free time and health.
