Flood, landslide and drought emergencies: the role of Naturalistic Engineering and NBS - Nature Based Solutions

In a meeting with the press first and then through a workshop on case studies, the Italian Association for Naturalistic Engineering (AIPIN) and ISPRA will address the topic of hydrogeological instability and climate change as contributing causes of frequent emergencies, serious damage and the numerous victims that are recorded every year and the actions we can implement to combat them.

Solutions based on Nature, Based Solutions - NBS, as solutions aimed at the restoration, recovery or protection of natural processes to protect ecosystems and biodiversity, with advantages also for human well-being, are successful. European and national strategies and programmes, also supported by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), go in this direction.

If it is necessary to resort to structural risk mitigation interventions, Naturalistic Engineering techniques must be favored, as they use plants as a building material, in combination with wood and biodegradable natural materials, to carry out cladding (anti-erosion), stabilization (root reinforcement) and consolidation (support) of slopes and banks, favoring a para-natural succession of vegetation and making our landscapes more harmonious, with aesthetic and recreational benefits and less impact on Natural Capital compared to gray infrastructures.

The participation of the ISPRA DG Maria Siclari is expected.
