This report, in addition to illustrate how the ecology and distribution of maritime pine (Pinus pinaster Aiton) in Italy, aims to highlight the issue of pine forests affected by cochineal (Matsucoccus feytaudi Ducasse). The infestation by this insect xylophagous was monitored for the first time in Tuscany in 1998 in the State Reserve Montefalcone. From here, showed the urgent need to find the guidelines for the recovery and rehabilitation of damaged areas. The book describes the major techniques of obtaining the basic material, the development and management of forest seed and the biological cycle of cochineal, in order to obtain the genetic diversity of plants resistant to insects.
