The Modelling System for Forecasting Short-Term Pollution Events in Aquaculture and Tourist-Recreational Areas
On Thursday, 29 October 2026, a training event will be held as part of ISPRA’s PNRR-MER Project. The event aims to illustrate the features, outputs and functionalities of the Modelling System for forecasting short-term pollution events in aquaculture and tourist-recreational areas.
The System, currently being implemented in three study areas — the Gulf of Tigullio (Liguria), the Gulf of Follonica (Tuscany) and the Sacca di Goro lagoon (Emilia-Romagna) — integrates field and satellite data with various modelling components (atmospheric, hydrological-hydraulic and marine-coastal) to characterise pollution sources and simulate the transport and dispersion processes of pollutants.

The System operates both in scenario mode and in forecasting mode, with a forecast horizon of up to 72 hours, making it possible to trace the link between pollution sources and the areas potentially affected. It therefore serves as a decision-support tool for the early identification and preventive management of environmental issues, with particular reference to short-duration pollution events associated with the presence of Escherichia coli (E. coli), total suspended solids (TSS) and particulate organic matter (POM) in coastal waters, in order to protect aquaculture and tourist-recreational areas.
The event will take place at the University of L’Aquila and will be delivered by experts from ISPRA and the Temporary Consortium of Companies (RTI) responsible for developing the System. The consortium comprises the University of L’Aquila, the National Research Council (CNR), ARPAE Emilia-Romagna, ARPA Liguria and DHI S.r.l. (single-member limited liability company).
Participation will be available both in person and remotely.
Registration form (by 27 October)
At the end of the event, participants will receive a certificate of attendance, with recognition of the training hours completed.
