Emissions into the atmosphere. Focus on the industrial sector
May 09, 2024 09:30 AM — May 09, 2024 01:30 PM Roma, Sala del Chiostro del Bramante - Facoltà di Ingegneria, Università Sapienza, Via Eudossiana, 18

The latest edition of the ISPRA publication "Greenhouse gas emissions in Italy" is online. Reduction objectives for 2030".

The trend in greenhouse gas emissions is decreasing and, thanks to the growth in recent years of energy production from renewable sources (hydroelectric and wind) and the transition to the use of fuels with lower carbon content, in 2022 they will mark a - 21% since 1990.

Despite the positive trend, greenhouse gas emissions in Italy in the last two years continue to grow and reach a total of 413 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent in 2022 (+0.4% compared to 2021). The constant increase in the transport sector is decisive, over 90% of whose emissions come from road transport, which compared to the previous year marks a +5% and confirms a trend that knows no pauses and exceeds 7% since 1990, a value in contrast to those of all other economic sectors which on the contrary recorded marked reductions, with the exception of waste which represents approximately 5% of the national total.

Mar 15, 2024 09:00 AM — Mar 15, 2024 04:00 PM Torino, ARPA Piemonte, Sala Polifunzionale, Via Pio VII, 9

The Air Quality Report - 2023 Edition, which describes the state and trend of air pollution in Italy, was presented on 15 March in Turin.

In 2023, the annual limit values for atmospheric particulate matter PM10 were respected at all measurement points, as were those for PM2.5 (311 out of 312), with an average reduction for the latter of approximately 13% compared to the average of decade 2013-2022. The daily limit value for PM10 was also respected in 89% of the monitoring stations, with exceptions concentrated above all in the north-east area of the Po basin (47 out of 63 exceedances), in the Vesuvius area and in the province of Frosinone.
The annual value of nitrogen dioxide is within the limits in almost all monitoring stations (98%), which in 2023 marks a reduction of 19% compared to the decade 2013-2022.
The exceedances occur in stations influenced by high road traffic flows: Turin, Milan, Brescia, Genoa, Bologna, Florence, Rome, Naples, Catania and Palermo.

"SNPA contributes to the pursuit of homogeneous levels of environmental protection throughout Italy. With 650 air quality monitoring stations it has one of the largest facilities in Europe and produces 25 million data per year” declared the President of ISPRA and SNPA, Stefano Laporta.

"The 2023 data outline an improvement compared to the recent past. But situations of non-compliance with the limit values persist and we have fallen far behind the deadlines set by the EU directives" declared the ISPRA General Director, Maria Siclari.

As part of the Green Med Symposium, ISPRA presents a new publication which, thanks to maps, graphs and tables, will allow you to visualize the geographical distribution of the main environmental information.

Five thematic sections - geosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, atmosphere and anthroposphere - to raise awareness of future challenges and contribute to the achievement of sustainable development goals, thanks to accurate and up-to-date scientific information.

The aim is to provide scientific information on soil, water, biodiversity, air, climate, waste, energy and the environmental impacts of human activities and, at the same time, to help raise awareness of environmental challenges.
The Atlas of environmental data integrates the EcoAtlante, the portal developed by ISPRA which offers a series of interactive cartographic paths useful for exploring the environmental data collected and cataloged in the National Environmental Information System, in line with the database of the Yearbook of environmental data, Yearbook of environmental data, which in line with the main national and international inter-thematic core sets, makes available over 300 statistical indicators on the state of the environment in Italy.

Greenhouse gas emissions: growing trend again, accomplices transport and global warming
Greenhouse gas emissions: growing trend again, accomplices transport and global warming
Apr 18, 2023

The scenarios up to 2030 are not very promising

The ISPRA National Inventory of greenhouse gas emissions and other pollutants is online

In 2021, greenhouse gas emissions in Italy will start to grow again after the stop of the pandemic period: in just one year (2020-2021) the values show a sharp increase (+8.5%), despite recording a decrease of 20% compared to 1990, thanks to the growth in recent years of energy production from renewable sources (hydroelectric and wind), energy efficiency in industrial sectors and the transition to the use of fuels with a lower carbon content. But the reduction is not enough: emissions are 11 million tonnes above the target set for 2021.

A situation which, according to estimates, seems destined to continue not only in 2022, but also in future years. In fact, the scenarios to 2030 are not very promising: a low reduction in emissions in the transport and heating sectors is expected and a misalignment with the objectives established by Effort Sharing which in 2030 could exceed 15 million tonnes. It is therefore essential to reverse the trend if we want to meet the emission reduction targets.
